Well Beings Care About
Spiritual Health
Aloha Ke Akua
We, the well Beings, care about spiritual health because it’s foundational to our success, happiness, and overall welfare. Although it may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of health, spirituality is essential.
In fact, it was the most important thing to the ancient people of Hawaiʻi. They held supreme reverence for Sky Father, Wākea, Earth Mother, Papahānaumoku, and the cosmos beyond. When they gazed up at the heavens, they felt a true sense of awe as the heavenly bodies represented the very presence of their gods. They divided the world into two dimensions, the sacred (kapu) and the natural (noa). The sacred world, which included the extraordinary and supernatural, was their true world and held incredible power. The natural world involved their everyday experiences centered around their spiritual beliefs and practices.
Accordingly, our kūpuna (ancestors) understood that spirituality fosters our desire to carry out our purpose, find meaning in our lives, and remain in the energy of lōkahi (harmony and unity with all elements of the expansive universe).
Why Well Beings Care About Spiritual Health
Research indicates that spirituality offers various physical, mental, and social benefits. For instance, studies on spiritual practices like meditation, prayer, and mindfulness have shown that they can boost the immune system, reduce stress, lower blood pressure, improve sleep, and lower the risk of depression. Additionally, nurturing our spiritual health brings meaning to our lives, which increases our happiness levels. It also increases gratitude and compassion for ourselves and all living things and fosters positive and healthy relationships. Ultimately, these experiences deepen our connection with the Divine and help us live a life of Aloha.
How Well Beings Care for Their Spiritual Health
To care for your spiritual health, we suggest you engage in practices and activities that nurture and invigorate your ʻuhane (soul-spirit). For example, you can do this through pule, or prayers that are divinely inspired and guided and provide you deep understandings. Or, you can do it through meditation, and being with Nature. You can also participate in hoʻoponopono (making things pono or right through forgiveness and letting go) traditions.
Furthermore, you can commit to regular noʻonoʻo or hoʻomalu (silent reflection in union with Nature) practices. Similarly, we encourage you to expand your awareness and observation skills to notice and interact with the many hoʻailona (signs from the universe) around you. We, the well Beings, believe by developing your intuition and connection to your naʻau (center core), you will be spiritually guided in your daily life. Additionally, by maintaining hōʻihi (respect; to treat and make sacred) for Ke Akua (God/Source/Universe) and all living things, you naturally nurture your spiritual health. And finally, by embodying the virtues of Aloha, you certainly will live a life filled with Spirit.
